Get introduced to an important design principle: balance!
Balance is the key to a good life. When you stand, you are balancing on your feet. When you are planning your day, you are balancing your time. Aesthetic balance is just as important as physical and timely balancing. When there is an equality of optical weight and importance, it creates a unified presentation. This is pleasing to not only the human eye, but the mind. And, it draws in consumers, which is your goal as a visual merchandiser (or store displayer).
To please and attract consumers, balance is a great design principle to implement. Since balance is determined by drawing an imaginary line through the center of a design, there are different types: symmetrical (formal), asymmetrical (informal), and imbalance (tension). When deciding which type of balance is best, think of your store image and target market. Also, when deciding which type of balance to use, keep the difficulty level in mind too. While symmetrical is easy to display, asymmetrical and imbalance are difficult to display in an effective manner. But, sometimes symmetrical can be boring and predictable, so step outside of your comfort zone!
A great example of balance used effectively is shown in this Louis Vuitton display in France during 2014. Symmetrical balance is used throughout the entire display. If you were to draw a line down the middle; the neon worded sign, the cherries, and the purses would be a mirror image. It would also show equal visual weight on both sides of the imaginary line. The use of balance in this display helps guide your eyes towards the merchandise: the purses. Also, it gives a since of dignity and high class, which is perfect for the store image of the prestige Louis Vuitton. Other than the symmetry being pleasing to your eyes, look at the delicious cherries!
