“Less is more”. This saying applies to many things in life, sometimes even visual merchandising. This depends on your store’s image and the theme you want to present in the display. One store will need an extravagant, over the top display to be effective; while another store will need a simple, straight to the point display to be effective. Visual merchandisers must decide what is best.
The way you display your merchandise is important. This determines an effective display, which leads to the goal: changing viewers into shoppers. The types of merchandise presentation are One-item, Line-of-goods, Related merchandise, and Variety/assortment displays. With this diversity, you are bound to find a way that is best for your store’s image and display theme.
A great example of merchandise presentation being used effectively is shown in this Hermes display in Tokyo during 2016. One-item display is being used. This is the showing and advancement of a single item. The best way to utilize this display is by selecting one item that represents the store, or a trend. Hermes selected one of its luxurious watches to be displayed. With this being the center focal point, and only piece of merchandise, it catches attention through dominance. This will make it easier to lure in shoppers. To make One-item displays enticing, you must have some type of WOW factor in it. Hermes did this perfectly by having artistic raindrops formed in a way that makes it look like there is movement. Also, wrapping the watch around this art piece as if it is a wrist is unique!
Takeaways
So, as a visual merchandiser, you should now understand the importance of merchandise presentation. The amount and types of merchandise you select to display will affect the efficiency of your display, which will also depend on your store’s image and theme. Would you try a simple approach like Hermes?
