Having a unique image and standing out from the crowd is great, but it can be costly. But, when you can present an image of uniqueness while being price conscious and resourceful, you are an innovator. Most likely, your budget as a visual merchandiser/store displayer will not allot for extravagant items. That’s why the use of items you already own, or inexpensive things, needs to be discussed. Use of furniture is a good example of innovation.

Furniture can be used as a prop, or a fixture, in window and in-store displays. When it is used as prop it can: elevate a display, replace a mannequin, provide a seat for a mannequin, balance an asymmetrical composition, be an attention getting device, set a mood, and/or create a setting. When it is used as a fixture, it serves as means of capacity, a feature, or signature fixture. The typical furniture used is: tables, drawers, armoires, curio cabinets, shelves, ladders, stools, and chairs. As a visual merchandiser, your possibilities are endless when using this option. You can be creative and get an array of messages across to your consumers.

A great example of furniture being used as a prop and fixture effectively is shown in this Gucci display in Italy during 2017. The vanity table in this display is dual purpose! It is used as a means of capacity by displaying merchandise on top of it and holding some in the drawers. But, Gucci precisely picked this pink, vintage-looking vanity table to do more than hold merchandise. It also helps support the theme in the window display. A vintage glamour vibe is can be seen from the lavish clothing material on the mannequins and expensive looking jewelry. The vanity table, with its old Hollywood lighted mirror that movie stars used, exemplifies this setting.

In conclusion: furniture can be a creative, functional thing to incorporate in your window, or store, displays. Be unique and show your store image!
